  Who We Are

We are a volunteer run 501c3 nonprofit membership organization with approximately 250 members. We support artists and those interested in the arts, providing opportunities to learn, teach, make, and collaborate.

The Collective is open to all who are 18 years-old and up with an interest in the arts – professional artists, beginning artists, and those who appreciate and support the arts. Our members come from Washtenaw, Jackson, Livingston, Monroe, Oakland, Wayne and beyond.

Mission

To provide an inclusive and supportive environment for a diverse community of artists to share knowledge and opportunities that promote individual excellence, collaboration, inspire new creative perspectives, and offer engagement with the public to foster participation, appreciation, and support of the arts.

History

This organization was founded as a small association and study group called Ann Arbor Women Painters in 1951 by Sarah Bull, Elsie Bailey and Doris Porter Mclean.  In 1992 the association incorporated to become a 501c3 non-profit organization. In 2002 the name was changed to Ann Arbor Women Artists to more accurately portray its members – artists working in a wide range of media.  By 2008, the Ann Arbor Women Artists began accepting men as members.  In 2020 the name was changed to Huron River Art Collective to demonstrate our growth into a more diverse and inclusive organization, and to better represent the area we serve.
